Maggie Messina

Advocate for Female Athletes Everywhere
Maggie grew up in abject poverty and transformed the challenges of her childhood circumstances into fuel for her adulthood successes. She feels a strong drive to pass along lessons of empowerment to help women and children rise from similar life situations to achieve lives they thought they could only dream of.
The first among a generation of women to own and operate a martial arts school, Maggie founded Taecole Tae Kwon Do and Fitness Inc., in 1996, and Taecole has been in operation continuously since then. Taecole is now one of the most successful martial art schools in New York State. In addition to serving tens of thousands of individuals over the years, Taecole also serves dozens of private and public schools in Nassau County, NY, as well as the Boy and Girl Scouts, Girls Inc, and many other non-profit organizations.
Master Maggie is a world-class martial artist and has won numerous gold medals for the USA. She has been teaching Martial Arts for over 35 years, is currently an 8th-degree black belt, and holds a seat as regional director for numerous martial arts organizations.
Maggie is passionate about advocating for female athletes. Facing numerous hurdles as a female athlete throughout her career, she became determined to help facilitate changes for future athletes and lessen the hurdles they might encounter. As such, Maggie is the founder of the Female Fighters Matter Too movement, whose mission is to bring equality to all athletes. This movement has gained international attention in the industry and is bringing about changes worldwide.
For many years, Maggie was a project coordinator for Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital in New York City. Year after year, she heads several toy, clothing, and food drives and personally delivers items to women with children in homeless shelters each year, never forgetting those who still live as she and her siblings once did.
Maggie has received many awards and accolades throughout her career, including but not limited to the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, The Most Powerful Woman in Business for NYS (Schneps Media), New York Assembly Certificate of Merit for Female Fighters Matter Too (Founder and President), and Martial Artist Legacy Award (AMAA). She also has received Special Congressional Recognition for her “outstanding and invaluable service to her community and everywhere she makes her mark”, and Special Recognition by NYS Senator Joseph P. Adabbo, Jr. for her “selflessness and tireless commitment to the State of New York and her loyalty and dedication to the betterment of the State of New York.” Master Maggie has been recognized further by her inclusion and induction into Who’s Who Women of Integrity, the Ocean State International Martial Arts Hall of Fame, the Amerikick International Martial Arts Hall of Fame, the Twin Towers Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and the AMAAF Women’s Hall of Fame.

Imagine a small, beautiful child…a little blonde girl with innocent blue eyes and a sweet smile. Her mother watches her from the couch as she plays on the floor nearby. The little one’s blonde locks get in her eyes, and she pushes them away, looking up at her mother. Her tummy growls, and she asks, “Mother, when will we eat again?”
Her mother’s eyes bulge out at the question, and she screams,
“Don’t open that stupid mouth.”
Abandoned. Abused. Alone. I was born into a life of endless hell and suffering. Before age ten, I had seen and experienced more horror and pain than anyone should ever know. One of eleven children, I became the victim of my mother’s alcoholism and horrifying abuse, my father’s passive abandonment, my foster mother’s psychotic beatings, and my foster father’s molestation. But that still wasn’t enough. I starved, lived in filth, was forced to steal, was mocked and beaten by neighborhood kids, was made to care for and keep secret my blind and crippled sister, and watched as my siblings were destroyed. Growing up that way, I didn’t have a chance. I fell into abusive relationships and drug addiction as a
young adult.
But I'm not a statistic. From my terrorized childhood with a drug-addicted, welfare mother to my life now as a successful businesswoman, happily married and volunteering my time and resources to help kids that grew up just like me. My memoir doesn’t hold back, telling my haunting life experiences that most people can’t imagine in their worst nightmares. Those experiences left me battling abuse, addiction, eating disorders, and the loss of my twin and youngest brother and sister due to suicide in my adult life.
AND I HAVE Overcome...
The story of my life doesn’t end the way it started. Today, I have done the unimaginable. I have beaten my addictions and left behind my abusive relationships. Not only have I overcome, but I am helping others wherever and whenever I can. I have built a successful business from the ground up and continue to move forward…healing myself while healing others.
I feel my story can inspire and help others who have been or are in abusive relationships. Reading my story will help others understand that they don’t have to suffer in silence and deserve better.
